The fourth annual Enviro-Vision Song Quest at Muni Arts Centre in Pontypridd saw a packed hall join in the frenzied excitement of the evening.

FACTOR: James Williams on stage

X-Factor star James Williams opened the event with a performance of “Oceans Of Waste”, the winning song from the 2008 competition by Tonyrefail Comprehensive School which he is now to release as a single.

RAP: Mountain Ash Comprehensive School

The major competition organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Streetcare Team saw six comprehensive schools produce their own songs and music to be performed in front of the enthusiastic crowd.

STAR: Tom Richards performed

Amidst a huge roar of excitement Y Pant Comprehensive School was named the winner of the county-borough wide competition followed by Tonypandy Community College in second place and Aberdare Girls Comprehensive School in third. The top prizes included £600 for first place, £300 for second and £100 for third.

The showcase of local talent raised the roof of the Pontypridd venue, as each of the youngsters took to the stage to perform their own compositions based on one of several environmentally themes including cigarette litter, recycling, graffiti, food waste, dog fouling, littering and landfill.

ON SONG: Aberdare Girls Comprehensive School

Also performing at the event was X-Factor hopeful Tom Richards of Hawthorn High School. The 16-year-old singer is about to begin the Boot Camp phase of the television talent show.

The Enviro-Vision Song Quest marked the fourth joint-project between the Council’s Streetcare Services Team and Sonig Youth Music Industry, which is part of the Council’s Cultural Services department.

Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf Cllr Simon Lloyd, who opened the event, said, “Year on year the Enviro Vision Song Quest gets better and better. Undoubtedly the standard of this year’s performance far surpassed all previous years which seems unbelievable considering how high the standard has always been.

Judges for the evening were Pablo Janczur, Sam Bolderson of Cwmmaman girl band The Kics, Kam Kelley of Red Dragon Radio, singer James Williams and Service Director for Streetcare Services Nigel Wheeler.

SUPPORTERS: The winners had plenty of support

Hawthorn High School opened with “We Are The Future”, followed by Mountain Ash Comprehensive School’s “Dog Do”, Aberdare Girls Comprehensive School with “Do The Right Thing”, Y Pant’s “This Is Visual Pollution”, Tonyrefail Comprehensive School with “Nature’s Health on the Brink” and finally “Fly Tipping Could Ruin Your Day” by Tonypandy Community College.

EXCITEMENT: The winners were announced

Ecstatic singers and musicians crowded the stage to receive their prizes before the winners from Y Pant performed their song one more time to the deafening roar of the crowd.

The winning band will perform at a special showcase concert in October at the Wales Millennium Centre organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.
