Church Village Bypass contractors Costain, turned their construction skills to gardening to provide a groundforce-style makeover for the Littlefolk Playgroup in Church Village.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s contractors in the £90million highway scheme volunteered their efforts were in support of Give & Gain Day, the UK’s largest and only day of action for employee volunteering, organised by Business in the Community.
Brian Greaves, Community Relations Manager for Costain said, “A couple of months ago we were approached by the Littlefolk Playgroup and asked if we could assist with a garden makeover.

“Since their premises had been relocated to Bethal Chapel in Church Village, the garden was totally overgrown and not safe or acceptable for the 50 toddlers that attend the playgroup to use as an outdoor play area. So as part of BITC’s ‘Give and Gain’ day we mustered more than 20 volunteers from the Costain team at Church Village and set to work. ”
The makeover included stripping heavy vegetation and weed, cutting back trees, creating a patio area and footpath, repairing damaged walls and re-grading and seeding the garden. The work was completed by the volunteers from Costain’s construction team, as well as office based staff and managers.

The initiative was supported by Tillhill Ltd, the landscaping sub-contractors for the Church Village Bypass and Tony Oestrich, a local businessman who provided two large tyres that were used as planters.
A number of parents and grandparents turned up and helped and a financial contribution was given by Griffin Mill Ltd who also attended and provided the children with Vuvuzelas, footballs and teeshirts donated by car manufacturer Kia as part of the World Cup sponsorship.

Cllr Andrew Morgan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning said: “Building good community relations has been a key objective in delivering the Church Village Bypass project and this event underlines the excellent relations we have with those individuals, organizations and business who live or work alongside the major highway.”

Allyson Harding, of Littlefolk Playgroup said, “I really can’t believe what has happened. The garden was an absolute nightmare and in reality was going to take a lot of time and fundraising to make it safe and useable for the children. I was aware that Costain were building the Church Village Bypass and working on a number of community initiatives so I wrote to them.

“The result is beyond my wildest dreams and Groundforce would have to go some way to beat Costain. I am so grateful to the team who were all brilliant.”

Owen Evans, Director of Business in the Community Wales, said, “This year more businesses than ever have demonstrated their commitment to their communities through volunteering. In projects across Wales companies have worked with local partners as part of Give and Gain day to leave a lasting impression through their effort. Give and Gain day is a fun way for teams to build their skills whilst putting something back into their communities.”
