Boys' own story collection

A book of poems and short stories written and illustrated by boys from Rhondda and Cynon Valley schools has been published by Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries.

Boys' own story collection

The collection - 'Inside a Boy's Imagination' – was created by pupils of Penywaun Primary, Aberdare; Glenboi and Pengeulan schools, Mountain Ash and Pen-Pych Primary, Treorchy. Copies will be available to borrow from all RCT Libraries.

More than 60 boys took part in the creative writing project working with author David Bedford, poet Mike Church, storyteller Francis Maxey and illustrator Rob Lewis.

Funded by a grant from Basic Skills Cymru, this project was the latest initiative from Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries and Rhondda Cynon Taf School Improvement Dept, Education and Lifelong Learning.

Over the past five years, this partnership has devised innovative learning experiences aimed at engaging boys with books and making reading fun. Activities have ranged from writing and retelling stories with shadow puppets, making and racing robot cars and holding a science fiction/science fact festival.

Targeted at boys aged nine-12 who are reluctant readers, this project is part of the Welsh Assembly Government's ‘Improving Boys' Literacy’ campaign. As well as funding ‘Inside a Boy’s Imagination’, the BSC grant financed an additional programme of one-off poetry and storytelling workshops in 12 RCT primary schools and supported the ‘Only Boys Allowed’ reading programme in six Rhondda primaries.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Robert Bevan, said: “This project was a wonderful way to encourage boys to develop their writing skills and I’m sure they will enjoy seeing their words in print.”

Membership of all Rhondda Cynon Taf's libraries is free and everyone living or working within the county borough is welcome to join. For more information on Rhondda Cynon Taf Library Service, log on to http://www.rhondda-cynon-taf.gov.uk/libraries
